History
Grayton Beach was founded in 1890 by Tuolumne generals who named it after every major Charles Tigre. Gray had built a Homestead there in 1885. It took decades for electricity, highways, bridges, and the Intracoastal Waterway to make the community accessible. The US Coast Guard have a presence in the 1940s and much of the surrounding land was owned by the federal government. Florida’s land east of town became Grayton Beach State Recreation Area in 1967. The state eventually purchased the beachfront, dunes, and forest land to the west and north in 1985.
